Massachusetts' government health care plan that from the start has provided

care plan predated Barack Obama's health care reform and according to the

Mitt's Father,
George Wilcken Romney was born in the Mormon colonies in northern
Mexico which were established by members of The Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter-day Saints. Many of the colonists went to Mexico due to
federal attempts to curb and prosecute polygamy in the U.S.
Mitt Romney's great-grandfather had five wives and at least one of his
great-great grandfathers had 12.

MORMON POLICIES CONCERNING (NEGROES - BLACKS - AFRICANS)
From 1849 until 1978, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
(LDS Church) (Mormons)had a policy against ordaining (Negroes) black men of African descent to
the priesthood.

Church: (1805-1844):
“Had I anything to do with the negro, I would confine them by strict law to
their own species...”Prophet Joseph Smith, Jr., January 2, 1845, History of

Prophet Brigham Young (1801 -1877): taught a much greater extreme. In a sermon given on March 8,
1863, Young stated,
"Shall I tell you the law of God in regard to the African race? If the white
man who belongs to the chosen seed mixes his blood with the seed of Cain,
the penalty, under the law of God, is death on the spot. This will always be
so" (Prophet Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, volume. 10, page
110).
According to Brigham Young, Joseph Smith classified these people as The Seed
of Cain. Young said that "Joseph Smith had declared that the Negroes were
not neutral in heaven, for all the spirits took sides, but 'the posterity of
Cain are black because he (Cain) committed murder.
Under the leadership of Joseph Smith, several African-Americans, including
Elijah Abel were admitted to the priesthood. But that policy changed
sometime before 1852, because in that year, church president Brigham Young
made a pronouncement to the Utah Territorial Legislature stating that
African-Americans "cannot hold the Priesthood
An early statement by Young about a priesthood ban in the LDS Church was
made on February 13, 1849. The statement which refers to the Curse of Cain
as the reason for the policy was given in response to the question, "What
chance is there for the redemption of the Negro?" Young responded, "The Lord
had cursed Cain's seed with blackness and prohibited them the Priesthood."
"there is a reason why one man is born black and with other disadvantages,
while another is born white with great advantages. The reason is that we
once had an estate before we came here, and were obedient; more or less, to
the laws that were given us there. Those who were faithful in all things
there received greater blessings here, and those who were not faithful
received less" (Doctrines of Salvation 1:61).
In 1852, while addressing the Utah Territorial Legislature, Young
stated, "Any man having one drop of the seed of Cain ... in him cannot hold
the Priesthood and if no other Prophet ever spoke it before I will say it
now in the name of Jesus Christ I know it is true and others know it.

there never has been a doctrine in this church that the negroes are under a
divine curse. There is no doctrine in the church of any kind pertaining to
the negro. ‘We believe’ that we have a scriptural precedent for withholding
the priesthood from the negro. It is a practice, not a doctrine, and the
practice someday will be changed. And that’s all there is to it"

he presented it to his counselors, who accepted it and approved it. It was
then presented to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, who unanimously
approved it, and was subsequently presented to all other General
Authorities, who likewise approved it unanimously.
Accordingly, all worthy male members of the Church may be ordained to the
priesthood without regard for race or color. Priesthood leaders are
instructed to follow the policy of carefully interviewing all candidates for
ordination to either the Aaronic or the Melchizedek Priesthood to insure
that they meet the established standards for worthiness

Shortly before the ten year anniversary of the 1978 revelation - Robert L.
Backman speaks of the William Daniels family in South Africa. They were the
only black members of the Mowbray Branch in the Cape Town District. They
saved money and sacrificed to see the temple in Salt Lake City. Brother
Daniels was in his 70s when he finally had enough money. "During his visit
he just stood on North Temple and Main Street and looked up at the spires of
the temple and said he would give his right arm to go up in that building.
He returned to South Africa without being able to go in, but knew that one
day his temple work would be done." His daughter later returned to Salt Lake
and performed her own work and that of much of her family in the Salt Lake

commitment from its members in prayer, study, service to others and charity.
A lifelong Mormon, Romney served as a missionary in France as a young man
and as a top Latter-day Saint leader in the Boston area. The Republican
candidate's commitment to the church may be a double-edged sword in the
contest for the Presidency. Some GOP voters are Christians who do not
consider Mormons to be part of historic Christianity.
